Sunday 8/9/09 Granada Day 2
We woke up around 7 because we had tickets to the Alhambra at 9. We took showers and then went downstairs. I asked if they had breakfast and he asked for my room number and then he handed me a slip of paper and pointed me in the direction of Hotel Carmen. I guess they contract our their breakfast. The hotel was pretty fancy and they had 3 buffet tables. One with fruit and sliced meat and stuff, a second one with croissants and hot food: fried eggs, bacon, scrambled eggs, and this weird crumby looking thing that I don’t know what it was, and a third table with juice.
They brought us this really black coffee. It wasn’t that strong but it was soo black. I chose to get Scrambled eggs, a piece of bread, a weird donut looking cinnamon thing, and a bagel. The bagel was probably the best thing. The bread was a little dry, the donut thing was so eggy and these scrambled eggs were so gross. I would have eaten a big plate of those rubbery eggs we got in that Irish Pub at the airport that one time. There were pieces that were a little black (what the hell would that be) and some bites seemed like they had a tiny bit of shell. It was gross.
On the way out of the hotel we asked the receptionist what direction the Alhambra was in and how long it takes to get there. She said 30 minutes. We decided not to walk because they seemed pretty strict about the time slots and we didn’t know what bus to take so we took a taxi. The meter was going even though we were standing still. (normal?) It ended up being 5 euros. Not bad, HOWEVER, we only had a fifty (which I didn’t know at the time) and when Pari handed it to the man he kinda freaked out and starting speaking loudly in muy rapido espanol. After about a minute I got out and looked for someone who might have change for a fifty and some older Spanish lady was going to do it but Pari started walking and was signaling that everything was ok. Pari had persuaded him to take a 10 dollar bill and told him is was about 6 or 7 euros. Thank god.
We retrieved our tickets and entered. The 9am entrance time was for the Palace and that is not the main entrance so we had to walk fast inorder to make sure we got there by 9. After waiting in a line (for it to be 9 exactly I guess) we walked into the Palace. It was beautiful, the most beautiful thing I have seen in my life…so far. The carvings on the wall were so intricate. I kept thinking to myself it probably took 30 minutes to do one square inch and this place was huge! The lions were being restored so that was a downer but it was all around amazing.

Pari bought a little rainbow kitty and we broke the 50. After sitting for a little while we went to Generalife, the gardens. It was pretty but there were so many steps. This was this really fat wet kitty that sat in front of these people and they fed it. Then it started chattering at them. It was crazy. That kitty was spoiled.

We finally found the exit to Alhambra and got on the bus (no crazy angry taxi men anymore). After a couple of stops we saw some neat little stores and decided to get off. We went into some stores, bought some stuff, and then sat at a café in Plaza Nueva to eat lunch. I was going to get a boca burger but thank god the waiter told me what it was…a regular hamburger with nothing on it. I guess other Americans had made the fatal mistake of thinking it was a Boca burger. We ended up getting 2 potato omellete sandwiches and patatas bravas (potatoes with spicy sauce). The sandwich was pretty good. It wasn’t too eggy, which we were afraid of.
Before we left the restaurant we asked where Puerto Real was, where our hotel is. He didn’t really point in any direction though. We thought it was funny that he used the Burger King that is at the end of street as a landmark. I guess it was the only BK in Granada..no veggie burger though :( We walked in the direction we thought it was but we ended up on the foot path to Alhambra. So we ended up taking a bus.

The bus ride was a little scary. At one point we were the only people on the bus and it was like we were driving through the mountains. Eventually a group of 6 very old people got on the bus and we went back down into the city. The bus system is so confusing. They don’t stop at all of the stops and there is no poster or anything on the bus telling you which stops are on the route. Eventually Pari realized where we were and everything would be perfect as long as the bus driver had taken a right but nooo…he took a left so we got off on the next stop.
The walk to the hotel was pretty easy. I have never felt more excited to see a BK in my life. After our long tiring journey we took a little siesta. About an hour or two later we walked towards the Arab baths to make an appointment for Monday. We booked two baths + massages for 10am the next morning. (58 euros)

Then we went to Teteria Alfaguara. I got a black tea with chocolate and caramel and coconut. I could barely taste the coconut and definitely couldn’t taste the chocolate and caramel. It was really good though. Pari got a black tea with orange and jasmine. Hers was alright. Mine was better. (5.40 euros)

We walked around a little but Pari’s foot was acting very strange. She had been wearing her ever fashionable Birkenstocks and her right foot (her smaller foot) had become swollen. But after some aspirin and some rest it returned more or less to normal.
For dinner we went to the Alhambra Café. We both got vegetable paella. It was very tasty. It had a lot of vegetables in it, snap peas, carrots, peppers, artichokes, cauliflower, peas, and lima beans. For dessert we ordered churros and chocolate. The chocolate (which was probably just jello pudding) was very delicious. The churros on the other hand weren’t that good. They weren’t bad but I wouldn’t get them again.

Saturday 8/8/09 Granada Day 1
I was so excited to get out of Cambridge. It is so boring. The last week I just read the True Blood books and went to movies. I saw Taking of Pelham 123, Coco Before Chanel, and The Ugly Truth. They were all entertaining. Coco was probably the best.
We rode the train to the airport and tried to check in/drop of our bags but we were too early. While we waited we ate at this cafeteria type place and split a jacket potato with beans and cheese. It was really good. Before we had to check our bags we had to take stuff out of Pari’s luggage (there is a weight limit for RyanAir of 15kgs) and put it in either my bag or my carry on. Let me explain why Pari’s bag was so heavy…
On Thursday we did our last bag of laundry and started to get ready to leave. I asked Pari if she went through all of her clothes and put in the big luggage what she wanted to mail back. She said she had and I told her that she should pack her suitcase. She did not take my advice…so on Friday morning I mailed the bug suitcase at Mail Boxes Etc. The lady was really nice/funny. When she was getting ready to tell me how much it would cost she asked if I had braced myself. 204 pounds! Not that bad I guess but then double that and add a 3% foreign transaction fee. Getting back to the original story. When Pari packed her suitcase later that afternoon it was full! I swear to god there were 16 shirts in there! So now we are going to mail back another box from Barcelona. Pari should just listen to me more! :)
We finally were able to check in. I put my bag on the scale- 14.7 kgs. Cutting in close! Then Pari put her bag on the scale- 13.6 kgs. Pari sabotaged me on purpose because she didn’t want the heavier suitcase. When we waited some more and then got to the gate it was sooo hot. But it wasn’t such a cattle call like EasyJet. Luckily we were able to sit together. The flight wasn’t that awesome. Our flight was delayed for 50 minutes because we missed our slot to go to the runway. So we had to just sit on the plane for 50 minutes before taking off. We sat right in front of the wing so the engine was so loud and it was making this funny noise, which didn’t help with my anxiety. I hate flying. The man that sat next to me wasn’t stinky so that’s a plus. We landed in the dark which was horrifying. I just read Outliers and there was a chapter about plane crashes and there was this one incident where the plane crashed into a mountain because they couldn’t see the runway. We exited the plane and waiting in this long line for this one man to check our passports. He was so emphatic about stamping. It was by far the best stamp job yet.
The bus that takes you into the city was waiting outside. It only cost 3 euros. I read online that our stop would be the second one but the second stop was some bus station and it definitely was not our stop. The old drunk man (we really did think he was drunk) would call out the name of the stop really fast. I asked these British women where they were getting off and that wasn’t our stop either. By this time there had been 5 stops. So when the ladies got off the bus I asked the driver where the street that our hotel was and he said “AQUI.” So we got off and none of the street signs were familiar. After a few minutes of walking around in circles like idiots I asked 3 old women. They started talking to each other so fast and then 2 pointed in one direction and the other in the opposite direction. Then they bickered some more and asked what the name of our hotel was (all in Spanish by the way) and they said, ”ooohhh Montecarlo…AQUI” and pointed down the road. It was 3 blocks from we were standing on the same road. Why do road names change without warning. Finding the hotel is always very stressful.

The hotel was very nice and very clean. It was right on Puerto Real. When we got there (around 11:30 at night) there was a concert. We put our stuff in the room and looked from a place to eat. We ended up at a Kebap (why not kebab I don’t know) but we got falafel plates. It was satisfying…not really spectacular but decent. Everyone was walking arothund with ice creams (not crema’s pari, helados) so we decided to get some. I got caramel and Pari got something with sesames and chocolate. The cone was soo good. It was like a waffle cone but not really thick and chewy. It was delicious.
We went back to the room and watched some TV. Ok parental advisory…..
There was this channel with infomercials for girls you can call but it was full fledged hanky panky, sounds, gross sounds included. It was kind of disgusting. Other than that weird porn channel a couple adlibbed American movies were on and CSI I think. Do you think they get the same voice for the same actor in all of their movies?

Sunday 8/2/09 London Last Day
Sunday we slept pretty late. I swear I was still dizzy for 20 minutes after waking up. We took showers in plenty of time to make the 10am breakfast cutoff. The other days we were cutting it close. Thankfully on Sunday’s breakfast lasts an extra 30 minutes. This time both of us had beans and a fried egg. I am definitely not a fan of fried eggs. I don’t like the yolk just staring up at me. Scramble it up baby! The beans were good though. I am pretty sure it is just like bush’s baked beans. Just like how my sauce at Hanams in Edinburgh was Campbell’s soup.
After breakfast we walked all the way back up the 5 flights of stairs to pack. Our suitcase was jammed packed. I seriously don’t think we could have fit another single item of anything in there. It was heavy too and I felt sorry for the cute receptionist girl who lifted it up over the counter so we could leave it there for a little while.
We went to the national gallery and walked around. I think this was about the time I really started to feel the effects of Saturday night. It was so hot in the museum! The only painting I really enjoyed was The Arnolfini Portrait. There wasn’t that much to see. After exiting the museum we walked around Tralfagar square for a little bit. There were so many people!

See the effects starting to show?

After that we went to Brick Lane. I was verrrrry verrrrry disappointed. There wasn’t anything good to buy, everything was just crap. It was like block after block of crap. We got lured into this Indian restaurant. They had a lunch special where you chose a starter, main dish, and rice or naan for 6 euros. So we both got vegetable samosas. They were good. They gave us a little tray thing with 3 different sauces. It was tasty. Then for our main dish we got vegetable curry and vegetable something I can’t remember. Anyway, one of them was sooo spicy. We can take spicy food but this was really spicy. Pari had to get a second soda. (the first round was free). The thing I didn’t like about it was that the little dishes they brought out were pretty much all sauce and hardly any veggies. Don’t these Indian men know that there has been a lack of veggies in my diet since I left. This is not good for a vegetarian. I feel like all we have been eating is bread and cheese. Oh well. Getting back to the Indian restaurant…we asked for their dessert menu and they brought us this menu that featured some type of fruit ice cream. WTF! I want some galub jamans dammit. Edinburgh was the best Indian meal because it was a buffet and you can get a wide range of dishes. Paris was probably the best flavor, because it was real real real Indian. Not some brick lane shit. There was not tourist in sight in Paris. Oh well….

Then we had to walk all the way back down hot, crowded brick lane to take the underground back to the hotel. Walking back to the hotel Pari stopped in this really neat little store and bought animal socks. They are pretty adorable. After that we got the heavy ass suitcase and went to the train station.
We ended up in a car (of the train) with a bunch of French students. They were talking a lot but not loud like the Spanish kids on the London eye. Someone was very stinky though and it was hot. It wasn’t that long of a trip though, maybe an hour. So then we had to walk the dreadful walk back to emmanuel college. At this point I really felt like shit. Soon enough we were back at boring Cambridge where we got Subway, or Sunday tradition

Saturday 8/1/09 London Day 3

Our fabulous room
At breakfast Pari decided that she liked the breakfast girl. She was very pretty. You could tell that she was seriously annoyed by all of the irritating people. She was very loud when she was cleaning up their dishes. That job would stink. We broke down and had some beans and a fried egg, well pari did, I was content with my cereal.
Then we went to Harrod’s. It was really pretty. They have a tourist shop. Haha. I wonder what percentage of people go in there to actually shop and end up buying something. 10%?
After Harrod’s we went to the Tate Museum. It was all modern art. There were these really creepy videos. God they were so creepy. There were a lot of shwinga lingas that’s for sure. They had some Andy Warhol things. Nothing was that eye catching though. Upon exiting this man snuck up on us, well really he was standing there the whole time, and said, “do you like snakes?” There was snake right by Pari’s head! Eww I don’t like snakes.

St. Pauls Cathedral and the Tate
So then we went to Maoz. Yes I know, we already went but it is so tasty. This time we didn’t get hummus though. Last time is tasted really strange. Putting on your toppings really is an art. I have perfected it.

On our way back to the hotel we had to go to this Japanese sock store and buy Pari some more tights. Drunksies Pari ripped her other pair the night of the Margaret Thatcher dinner. Then we regrouped at the hotel. I decided to go for a little walk. I didn’t really get that lost though. I knew the whole time which general direction the hotel was in. I found the Lyceum theatre and then decided to go back to the hotel. When I got to the hotel I decided to walk more in the other direction that we never walk. It wasn’t interesting at all. It was kinda like walking down the halfway scary section of broad street. You know, where the Wendy’s is. Then I happened to stumble upon an underground station and decided to take it back to the hotel. Pari got a kick out of that one.
I am glad I had found the Lyceum earlier because it was raining pretty hard when we were walking. You could see the Lion King posters 3 blocks away. It is pretty neat. We went to find our seats and we are on the very first row smack dab in the middle. I got really anxious that the seats were going to be terrible and we wouldn’t be able to see anything. The seats were awesome though. Nobody’s big head was in front of you and it was as if the people were right there…because they were. When I asked Pari if she liked the seats her response was, “yeah it was ok.” All Pari cares about is kitties.
The show was so amazing. It was really funny too. The actors threw in some adult jokes. There were a lot of kids there. There was this little boy next to me and in the beginning he took of his shoes and they were so stinky. God. And then I happened to look over and saw that he had both of his pinkys in his nose. :) The seats were good. I feel as though we didn’t miss out on the depth really. A lot of the actors would stand pretty much on the ledge of the stage. I didn’t like the actor who played the grown Simba though. He had a really weird accent and it was really distracting.
There were so many animals, well puppets. Pari really liked the leopard. It is funny to see how they make there facial expression like the animal. Most of the time the actors head is the animals head. I liked how elephants came down the aisles in the beginning. Overall, I would definitely recommend seeing the Lion King. I think I would even see it again. Oh and you could definately tell that good ol Elton wasn't involved because at random points in the play all of the really gay looking muscular men would just break out in dance. It was funny.

Ok, so I got those pics from the internet...but you get the point.
After the play we walked back to the hotel and got ready to go to Candy Bar, a lesbian club. Supposedly they have a pole dancer downstairs on Saturday night but one never came out while we were there. Basically the whole time we just stood against the wall and watched all the other drunk people make a fool of themselves. There were these two girls that were getting really hot and heavy. It was actually a little sickening. The DJ played good music though. Pari and I got pretty drunk and eventually had to use the bathroom. So I stumbled into the bathroom and headed for one of the stalls and I thought to myself what the hell is someone doing sitting in the bathroom. I figured that mystery out when I went to go wash my hands. I was soo dizzy and she said “soap” and I held out my hand and then after I rinsed she said “paper towel.” I’m glad that scary lesbian was in the bathroom though, she was very helpful, and efficient. Then Pari and I made up stories to tell each other about what happened while the other one was in the bathroom. I won’t say what Pari said to me but it involved an Indian girl and chana masala. Haha. I had a thing for the bodyguard that was standing in the doorway right next to me. Let’s pretend that I don’t remember what I said.
Walking up the 5 narrow, windy flights of stairs was a very difficult task. I am almost one hundred percent sure I tripped on every single one. I had a lot of fun…
